Name: Baton; Date: 2nd half of the 19th century, before 1896; Country: Russia; Materials: wood, silver, gilded silver; Measurements: length 37 cm, diameter 2,8 cm; Ownership: Jan Stanisław Witkiewicz’s collection; Inventory number: JSW 141; Description:

a massive wooden baton with silver fittings; its conic core was divided into three sections with easily discernible narrowings; the widest part of the grip was grooved and finished with a fitting in the form of a lyre whose arms are made up of swan necks; the mid section was grooved in a spiral fashion and provided with a metal band designate for an inscription; the third section was likewise grooved in a spiral fashion and finished with a silver tip with a beaded motif; each of the three parts was decorated with silver and gilded rings with floral motifs and plamettes. According to the (partially illegible) hallmarks, the baton was stamped in Russia before 1896.
