black baton with a large silver grip with trapezoid sides; conical body made of dark lacquered/black-painted wood; silver grip in the shape of a truncated pyramid with two shorter sides decorated with grooves; the body widens from the bottom towards the rectangular, flat tip with a monogram; at 1/3 of the length, a silver ring was fitted which widens into an oval, serving as an inscription frame; silver fitting at the tip; all silver components are decorated with acanthus leaf engravings. The baton was hallmarked for Birmingham 1894 (grip) and Chester 1894 (ring), maker’s mark is illegible. The baton is similar to exhibit JSW 28 from the same collection. As per inscription, the baton was presented to conductor Charles Hancock as a token of appreciation for his performance of [G.F. Haendel’s] “Israel in Egypt” on 4 and 23 March 1897.
